Santa Monica,CA - Los Angeles County - May 8, 1907 - Old Soldiers' Home Photograph :
This gold mounted 8" by 6" photo, by an unknown photographer, took this photo of people standing on the steps of the Old Soldier's Home in Santa Monica, CA in 1907. With the mounting the photo measures 11 1/2" by 9 3/4." The photo has some foxing but overall the focus is clear and the contrast is high. The mounting also has a lot of foxing, along with fingerprint and liquid stains. All four corners are worn as are some of the mounting's edges. There are also liquid stains on the back and some other stains. Faintly visible in the upper left corner written in pencil "taken at the Soldiers Home, Santa Monica, Cal." Some of the men in the photo have on Shriner's hats. Many of the men have on medals. Several of the folks are wearing ribbons. Besides writing on the mounting where the photo was taken, there is also a notation on the bottom right, "The Balloon Rout [sic], Loss [sic] Angles [sic] Calif, May 8 07." Actually, the Old Soldiers' Home was one of many popular stops or destinations of Balloon Route trolleys. People would board a trolley car for a ride to various points of interest in Southern CA. When the trolley stopped, the people would disembark, have their photo taken, and then the folks would enjoy a meal. Meanwhile, the photographer developed the photos. When the passengers returned to the trolley for the trip home, the photographer would then sell his products during the return trip to Los Angeles.
