View of Native Americans at Pueblo. Identified on the back as Views of the Great Southwest by HT Hiester, Santa Fe, New Mexico. Mautz says Hiester (correct spelling Heister) was active in Santa Fe from 1871-78. Santa Fe Pueblo refers to the Native settlement that preceded and underlies present-day Santa Fe, New Mexico. The site was originally occupied by ancestral Pueblo peoples‚-likely the Tano or related Tewa speakers‚-long before Spanish colonists founded Santa Fe as a colonial capital in 1610. Elements of that Pueblo heritage remain visible in the region's architecture, place-names, and the nearby modern Tewa pueblos such as Tesuque, Nambe, Pojoaque, and San Ildefonso.
