A view of the old "Palace," in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Cabinet card with photograph measuring 6 1/2 x 4" with white border mounted on green cardstock with a gold border. Overall measurement of 8 x 5" with mounting board. Contrast is low to medium with good focus. There are no signs or people present in the photo. Several worn areas are present along the edge and on the corners with a pinhole noted in the bottom and right borders. "3012. The Old "Palace" Santa Fe" printed on lower left of photo with "The W.H. Jackson Photo. Co.," printed on the lower left of the cardstock border with "Denver, Colo." printed on the lower right of the cardstock border. "The Chain & Hardy Co. Art Dealers, Denver, Colo." printed while "By W.H. Jackson, note Jackson's Shadow" hand written on the reverse. The photographer, W.H. Jackson, is considered one of the most prolific and famous of the 19th century western photographers. He formed a partnership with Chain & Hardy Booksellers c. 1884, producing many Colorado and Rocky Mountain publications (Ref: Mautz). The image shows the Palace leading from the left toward the center of the image. A line of trees and a gazebo are on the right side of the image. As stated on the reverse, the photographer's shadow is apparent in the bottom right of the photo. Built originally in the early 17th century as Spain's seat of government for what is now the American Southwest, the Palace of the Governors provides a history of Santa Fe, New Mexico, and the Southwest area. The adobe structure is now a state history museum, and was named a Registered National Historic Landmark (1960) and an American Treasure (1999) (Ref: palaceofthegovernors.org).
