Large Exquisite Native American Santa Clara Carved Avanyu Pottery Bowl by Margaret Tafoya (1904-2001), measures 8'' x 5'', heavy thick walled pottery, signed on the bottom, FYI: ''Maria Margarita ''Margaret'' Tafoya, given the Tewa name Gia-Khun-Povi, (Corn Blossom) unintentionally became the matriarch of a family of renowned Santa Clara Pueblo potters, each of whom created their distinctive styles. She was a guardian of traditional pottery making methods and techniques. She created large vessels with stone polished surfaces. Her carving was done before the piece was polished. She produced her work from the 1920's through the 1980's. Throughout her career, Margaret Tafoya won numerous awards, including Best of Show at Santa Fe Indian Market in 1979 and 1980.''
