A comparable votive stupa in form and decoration can be found in the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford (accesino no. EAOS.59) and in the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco (accesino no. B60S309). Such a stupa was erected in great quantities by monks or ordinary people around significant Buddhist shrines.

Stupa

The stupa is deemed one of the earliest and most important Buddhist structures and is viewed as being a symbol of Buddha and dharma. In Sanskrit, the wordstupmeans ‘to heap up or accumulate’. Originally, this was used to denote semi-spherical mounds out of soil or stone, in which the remains of the dead were kept. The semi-sphere symbolized completeness and was used as an emblem for the universe. The stupa consists for the most part of a square-shaped platform, from which a dome with a tip extends.

Condition: The sandstone stupa is in age related condition. The upper part is a later addition. The height measures 33 cm.
