The present figure is presumably the representation of Ishana, the guardian deity of the northeast, which has some features in common with Shiva. Compare a similar sandstone figure in the Asian Art Museum, San Francisco (accession no. B62S18+). An attribution as Shiva Bhikshatana or Vrishavahanamurti accompanied by a dog or the sacred bull Nandi would also be possible. A comparable piece is found in the San Antonio Museum of Art. For the characteristic figure representation compare lovers at the Museum Rietberg, Zurich (accession no. RVI 256).

Shiva

Shiva is one of the most important gods of Hinduism and can be literally described as ‘the auspicious’. He is often depicted in his bull Nandi, his wife Parvati or with his sons Ganesha and Skanda. The unity of the deities Shiva, Parvati and Ganesha are considered as divine family. Shiva embodies the creation and the new beginning, the preservation as well as the destruction and is known under various names.
