The present figure is presumably the representation of Ishana, the guardian deity of the northeast, which has some features in common with Shiva. The water jug in one of his hands, however, suggests that this is Ishana and not Shiva. Compare a similar sandstone figure in the Asian Art Museum, San Francisco (object ID B62S18+). See also an Ishana figure in the British Museum (accession no. 1962,1017.1). An attribution as Shiva Bhikshatana or Vrishavahanamurti accompanied by a dog or the sacred bull Nandi would also be possible. A comparable piece is found in the San Antonio Museum of Art.

Condition: The figure is in fair condition consistent with age. The lower left area has been restored. It measures 64 cm in height.

Provenance: Collection of Jack Zuberbühler, Switzerland
