Sandor Bernath (1892-1984), Untitled (Rancho de Taos Church), signed lower left, watercolor on paper, c. 1935, 12 ¾ x 17 ½ inches
Sandor Bernath was born in Hungary in 1892, but immigrated to the United States as a youth. In the early 1920’s, Bernath was an up and coming artist in New York City. He studied under Edward Hopper and was granted membership to the American Watercolor Society and the Brooklyn Society of Modern Artists. Though there are no records known, several works produced around 1922 indicate that Bernath was studying abroad in France and Czechoslovakia.
His last show on record was in Brooklyn in 1927. After that, his whereabouts have been speculated to include Maine, Pennsylvania, South America and New Mexico. It is thought that Bernath followed his contemporaries to Taos. Though he died in Belize in 1984, his last listed address showed him residing in Maine in 1945.

Previews and Inspections:
Condition reports are available upon request for all lots. We would also be happy to send additional images. All objects are on display at the gallery and available for preview between the hours of 10:30am and 6:00pm
Sales Tax:
Buyers are required to pay any applicable state and local sales tax. If shipped outside of the city and county of Denver and/or the state of Colorado, all applicable state and local use taxes due are the sole responsibility of the buyer.

Payment:
Payment in full is due in full within 20 days following conclusion of the auction.
Under no circumstances does the title ever transfer before the seller receives payment in full.
Returns:
We have made every effort to properly represent all lots. We will provide a limited warranty for a period of 7 days following receipt of the purchase by the bidder. If the buyer is not satisfied that the lot purchased is genuine or the condition is found to be not as stated, David Cook Galleries will offer a full refund (hammer price and buyer’s premium.) After the initial warranty period expires, the seller may request that the buyer obtain the opinion of up to two mutually agreed upon recognized experts in the field of the disputed item; any applicable fees will be at the expense of the buyer. All refunds will be made following return receipt of the item(s) in the same condition as of the time of sale. There shall be no other means of recourse by the buyer other than what is listed above.
