San Jose, Costa Rica, Banco Internacional, 10 colones front printer's model, 30-3-1927, series B, PMG Choice UNC 64, unique. SCWPM-189Bpm1. Incredible and unique hand-crafted printer's model of a concept design for the Banco Internacional de Costa Rica's 10 colones in 1927; this design, with variations in perspective and coloration from this concept art, was later produced in 1929 though the vast majority of that limited print run was provisionally overprinted in 1937 and 1938 (SCWPM-189B, then 199 with the provisional overprint). Close inspection shows every detail has been carefully aligned and pasted together to represent the bank note. Then, an artist hand colored and shaded the central design, denominators, and bank title highlights - from vivid blue tones around the borders to the pale green and earthy hues of the Costa Rican coffee plantation scene. Even the leaves and beans in the coffee trees were intricately painted, lending itself to a 3-D effect. The careful production put into this printer's model truly highlights the concept of bank notes being works of art. We can only note a small tear in the upper top margin. As this design was modified and produced in low numbers with almost all overprinted, this concept model remains the only means to own this specific bank note design; it is mounted in a thick, heavy cardstock frame with Thomas de la Rue's stamp on the back.
