San Ildefonso Blackware Pottery Bowl
Circa 1923-1926
Height 2 3/8 in. Diameter 7 1/2 in.

This compressed globular bowl is decorated with an undulating avanyu (water serpent) and rain cloud accents on the polished ground against the matte painted surface. The base is signed "Marie." Maria Martinez was the first Pueblo potter to sign her pottery on a regular basis. 1923 is the generally accepted date for this practice to begin. "Marie" was selected instead of "Maria" because it was suggested that Marie was a name more familiar to the non-Indian public.

Provenance
Bonhams and Butterfields, Sale 7437E, Lot 5393, June 9, 2003.
