San Francisco and Savannah. Group of seven in
San Francisco and Savannah. Group of seven interesting letters: 1) San Francisco, June 1854, 2 pp. "...There was quite a large fire here...destroying about 60 houses...There are 3 telegraphs in operation now...San Francisco is improving all the time...I am going to work for $75 per month...In stores business is very dull, goods very low...." 2) Letters from business traveller Cyrus Stedman, 1830s, five from Savannah, one from Boston, to wife, about commercial and family matters. One in an unusual aqua blue ink. "...I have a chance to sell Miss Chenery pistols at 8 dollars...He (James) and his wife are at loggerheads again. He licked his wife within 48 hours after he landed. She has got a terrible black face. She tried to kill him with the carving knife...." Five with good postal cancellations and manuscript markings. Stedman's signature curiously clipped from one letter, else fine.
