The San Francisco Mint ingots appear with different forms of the stamped vignettes: a shorter eagle looking left in an oval, and a more evenly proportioned eagle within a circle. It has been assumed that the oval eagle pattern is older, and while this may be so, no proof has been found in a thorough literature search. Silver bars could be obtained at the San Francisco Mint in the 1930s and 40s on request for either payment of their values or assayed silver submitted for refining. The circular patterns with dates are all post-1945. This flat ingot was produced at the Mint of the United States at San Francisco, 999.75 fine, weighing 27.26 ounces. It is 3.75" wide, 3" tall and 0.5" deep. Numbers 208 and 266 are on the obverse, and 1861 on the side. These flat ingots are thought to be coining ingots. The left facing eagle vignette is oval, 1.25" by 0.75" inch.
