Lot of four (x4) San Francisco Exchange certificates, first (2x), second (1x) and third. None are preprinted bank forms, and are probably from early commission merchants. Includes: 1) Second Exchange note, unnumbered, dated August 23, 1853. Black and grey on creme. Two stunningly detailed vignettes, sailing ship with paddle wheel (top center) and Greek woman sitting. 2) First Exchange note, unnumbered, dated April 10, 1855. Black on grey. Three vignettes, eagle with shield, olive branches and lightening bolts (top center), sailing ships (left), hand plow with bale of hay, rake and shovel (bottom center). Chip upper right, folds, burn hole. 3) Third Exchange note, No. 3465(?), dated February 19, 1860. Black on creme. Three vignettes, sailing ship (bottom left), steam locomotive (top left), sailing ship with paddle wheel (top right). 4) First Exchange note, No 1163, dated November 14, 1863. Black and grey on creme. Blue 2-cent GW IR revenue stamp, written over. Stunningly detailed vignette of steam locomotive and coal car (left). Franklin Collection.
