San Francisco,CA - c1915 - Pan Pacific Expo Photograph :
A night-time view of the Pan Pacific Exposition in San Francisco. Photograph measures 12 x 5", with no matte or backing. The contrast is high, while the focus is sharp. Photographer listed using blue rubber stamp on reverse: "Get It At Clyde's, C.G. Arrasmith, Berkeley, Cal." (not in Mautz) "1915 Pan Pac. Expo" is written in pencil in the top left corner of the reverse, while "NY" is in pencil on the far right corner. The Panama Pacific International Exposition was the world's fair held in San Francisco, California, in 1915. With construction taking more than three years to complete, the fair had great economic implications for a city that was nearly destroyed by the earthquake and fire of 1906. It ran from February 20th until December 4th, and was considered a great success. In the center of the photo, recognizable even after dark, was the Tower of Jewels. It stood 43 stories tall, and was covered by over one hundred thousand colored glass "jewels" that swayed and reflected light as the Pacific breeze blew through them. In order to light the fair, GE designed an illumination scheme which utilized thousands of carefully hidden colored spotlights, giving the buildings a glowing look in the evenings. A "Scintillator," or barge floating in San Francisco Bay, was packed with 48 beaming searchlights that projected seven colors of light into sky. It was made even more impressive by a locomotive positioned on a platform on the Bay, generating steam for the lights to reflect from.
