Fort Point was known as the "Gibraltar of the West Coast" according to the Fort Point National History website. It sits at the narrows of the Golden Gate entrance to San Francisco Bay. Originally built in the late 1850s to the early 1860s to protect the city and it's important businesses against attack, it now houses a military museum. The fact that the Army built the fort gives evidence to how important the Gold Rush was to the entire U. S. and its economy. Fort Point was one of 47 forts built under the 1820 government guidelines. The Army Engineers built the fort to withstand bombardments by using building methods first used in European warfare by the French. Those ideas translated to thick and low masonry walls with many openings for guns. This style is formally known as the "Third System." This mounted cabinet card, by an unknown photographer, measures 7 1/4" by 4 1/4." Mounted 8 1/4" by 5." It's focus is sharp and contrast is high. The mounting has foxing and some discoloration. Written on the photo twice in white is "Fort Point and Golden Gate." Collectors of San Francisco or military history photos will be delighted with this offering.
