San Francisco,CA - c 1881 - Sutro Heights Advertisement with Subdivision Map :
Measures 21”x by 33.” Crème color with brown print. One side has the map of the Sutro Heights subdivision. West is the Pacific Ocean with Sutro’s Cliff House, Seal Rocks, and the Sutro Baths noted. On the north, the land has been reserved for a government reservation and park. Recorded on the south edge of the subdivision is Golden Gate Park. Street names, starting in the north and working south, in the subdivision are: California Street, at the uppermost east side, Clement Street, Cliff House Road, Point Lobos Street, A Street, B Street, C Street and D Street. Starting west and going east there are: Ocean Boulevard, 49th Avenue, 48th Avenue, 47th Avenue, 46th Avenue, 45th Avenue, all the way down to 32nd Avenue. The subdivision will have two different trolley lines servicing the area: The Bush Street Line and the Powell Street Line. Will E. Fisher and Co. are the real estate agents for the subdivision. The map also denotes the railroads in the area: Park and Ocean and Park and Cliff House. The latter has a depot near Cliff House and the Sutro Baths. The ad notes “Terms, $25 Balance in Monthly Installments $10 each interest at the rate of 7% on deferred payments.” On the reverse of the map, Fisher and Co. advertise the location, the view and say what an investment the property will be. Fisher and Co. go on to say that the area is destined to become home “to the wealthy and refined.” Most important to the area is access to the city through the extension of steam cars of which five are building new lines to service the area. Also advertised are macadamized roads, graded lots, sewer, water, gas, and electric light hookups. Another part of the ad says that $30 per month will amount to $2350 in six years. All of that money, says the ad, could be lost if one rents. Not only does the company offer easy payments on the lots but also says that those who purchase the lots “can make arrangements to have houses erected on a system of easy monthly payments.” The ad does not mention how long the monthly installment plan lasts. The points mentioned in the ad seem to be similar to ads of today for marketing houses: close to transportation, all the modern conveniences, close to shopping, and selective neighborhood.
