San Francisco,CA - Selby Smelting Mining Documents :
Lot of 10 separate items from the Selby Smelting and Lead Company a branch of the Selby Smelting and Refining Company. 5 of the documents are receipts for separate bullion exchanges. There is an assay receipt numbered 2395 and dated July 1, 1885 for gold bullion from the Anglo California Bank. It had a declared net value of $3298.08. Also, four shipping valuations numbered 1803, 9316, 8399, and 1542 from 1920-1922. In addition there is a yellow and black unissued check numbered 671. Selby Smelting & Refining Company was established by Thomas Selby, an Englishmen who came to San Francisco in the gold rush in 1849. He started a business in metal and hardware and in 1856 established Selby Smelting and Lead Works: the first smelting operation for metals other than gold and silver on the west coast. When Selby enlarged the company to forty furnaces it soon became America’s largest smelter. After Selby died in 1875, his son continued to run the company. In 1905, Selby was bought out by the American Smelting and Refining Company. Afterwards the company was also successful. In fact the success was so great that American Smelting left the Selby name intact. Selby was closed by American Smelting in 1970 due to taxation and environmental problems. Selby Smelting and lead was a subsidiary of Selby Smelting & Refining Company.
