By 1854, the prosperity of the first great wave had subsided and the recession would soon become the first major depression of the area. Many banks and business owners had thought that a decrease in gold from mines in the area was temporary. Immigration to the west had decreased by 1854 and soon miners were migrating back to Atlantic states. Placers shut down soon thereafter. Some miners transitioned into farming and the area soon produced many articles previously imported. This adversely effected import houses located in San Francisco and furthered thye financial trouble. The building boom collapsed and soon the financial climate returned to rather normal. Many banks and express companies also folded. These checks were issued prior to the collapse and note a more lucrative time in the history of the first great wave. (Byington/Lewis, vol. I).
