San Francisco,CA - Memorandum of Gold and Silver Bullion Deposited at the United States Mint at San
Memorandum of Gold Bullion was submitted to the United States Mint at San Francisco by The American Express Railway Company. A.E.R.C. submitted this memorandum with their findings classified as amalgam cakes. Amalgam is a mixture between mercury and another metal, in this case gold or silver. When gold extraction was used with amalgam, the ore deposits were usually found in large gray lumps. These amalgam lumps were typically heated at very high temperatures; the gold would separate, and the mercury could be reused. The resulting gold was typically referred to as “flour gold.” This assay memorandum is numbered 7178, and has assay categories for weight before and after melting, the fineness and value for the quantities of gold and silver. It measures 9 ½” x 6”. The mint superintendant PE Springer signed. It is dated June 5, 1920. Overall good condition.
