San Francisco, CA- $20 1875 National Gold Bank Note Fr. 1153 The First National Gold Bank Ch. # 1741 White PaperA great rarity from the Herget collection which has not appeared at public sale since 1989. It is, by several grades, the finest of only seven reported Series 1875 San Francisco $20 National Gold Bank Notes, and is one of only three reported white paper National Gold Bank Notes of any denomination believed to exist. Its pedigree can be traced to the famed Amon Carter, Jr. collection, and finally to a Lyn Knight sale in 1989. Mr. Herget obtained the note in 1991 from John Rowe of Dallas. Along the way, it has been variously graded as Very Fine (twice) and Fine (once). Either can be amply justified by this attractive and well printed piece, but we will compromise and label the note here as Fine-Very Fine, a grade that truly reflects the reality of the note and should satisfy even the fussiest of graders. One of the other two White Paper examples was offered at this year's ANA convention at a well into six figures price. That may be high, but in this market, where rarity and condition are all important, it is likely that this numismatic treasure will now likely reach or exceed...
