San Francisco,CA - 1906 - Grant Ave and Post Street View Photograph :
This 9 3/4" by 7 1/2' black mounted photo by an unknown photographer shows the devastation the San Francisco earthquake and fire of 1906 had on some of the prominent local businesses. Written in white on the photo are the names of the missing buildings and occupants. The "Chronicle and Annex, Raphael's, Mutual Savings, Call, and R.D. Davis' Store." Historians recount that the Chronicle and the annex that was under construction survived the earthquake but burnt down in the ensuing fire. Mutual Savings was owned by Banker James D. Phelan. The Call was another newspaper. Raphael's was most likely Raphael Weill's Dry Good's store or mercantile establishment. R. D. Davis and Company was also a clothing store. Viewers can clearly see smoke rising from the rubble and a few steel frames standing like burnt, limbless trees after a forest fire. It seems as if the ground opened and swallowed up whole buildings. The photo has sharp focus, but the edges are all turning black, some have more black than others. With the mounting the photo measures 12" by 9 3/4." The mounting has the number 44 written in white on the top. The cardboard is in good condition and shows very little wear around the corners.
