San Francisco,CA - 1906 - Fire following the San Francisco Earthquake Photograph :
Three photographs document the San Francisco fire. Photograph one measures 8 ½”x7”, gray single matte 13 ¾”x10 ¾”, high contrast—minor yellowing, and the focus is sharp. Raphael’s and M. A. Gunst & Co. store fronts can be clearly read. The stores are located on Kearny Avenue. In this photo buildings await their fate as the fire creeps through the city. Flames can be seen coming out of the windows in the largest building. Photograph two measures 9 5/8”x7 1/2”, gray single matte--lower left corner is bent 13 ¾”x10 ¾”, high to medium contrast—light colors on the left and dark on the right, and the focus is sharp. A crowd is gathered on the street as the fire rages in the background. Wagons and buggies are on the street loaded with belongings as people try to save what they can. This is a fascinating and dreadful scene. Photograph three measures 9 ½”x7 ½”, brown single matte with dark brown border 12 ¾”x10 ¾”, high to medium contrast—tends toward the blacks, and the focus is sharp. There is a scratch on the upper right corner of the photo and the lower left corner of the matte is bent. This photo is shot from a roof top and shows the city ablaze. One street is in clear view and is loaded with people. All three mattes have two-hole punches on the top. Overall, the photos are in great condition. Photographer is identified in all three photos as A. Blumberg. On April 18, 1906, an 8.25 quake struck the city of San Francisco at 5:15 am. Fires followed in the wake of the quake and finished off much of the city. The fires burned for three days, destroyed approximately 500 city blocks, some 25,000 buildings, and left over a quarter million people homeless. Hundreds died.
