San Francisco,CA - 1886 - G. A. R. 20th National Convention in San Francisco Photograph :
This J. H. Dall 4 1/2" by 7 1/8" mounted cabinet card commemorates the August 1886 20th GAR Annual National Convention held in San Francisco. With the mounting the photo measures 5 1/8" by 8 1/4." The photo is in good shape, its focus is good as is the contrast. The mounting has several discolorations either from fingerprints or foxing, and some wear on the top two corners. The upper left corner is flaking. Printed on the front in italics, Bradley and Rulofson, San Francisco. The "encampment," as the newspapers called it, took place in Union Square. Union Square was named after the Union cause in the Civil War right before it began. Military statues are ensconced at the site. Atop the Union Arch sits a bronze Angel. Hanging directly below the angel is an American Flag medal with 13 stars and stripes. There are several other flags, crests and symbols also hanging from or attached to the arch. Behind the trolley in the center, the photo catches the core of a bustling San Francisco. Written on the back of the mounting in pencil is, "1886 20th National Encampment GAR/1863-1889." Stamped on the back is "C. Beach/Bookseller and Stationer/107 Mont'y Street S. F." Printed on the back is "Bradley and Rulofson/Photographic Gallery/Gold Medals Awarded over all Competitors/Entrance, 14 DuPont Street,/over the City of Paris,/Between Market and Geary, San Francisco./N.B.- We preserve our negatives for five years (and for a longer period, when desired), duplicate copies of which can be obtained at reduced rates." The back of the mounting has a lot of fingerprint smudges.
