San Francisco,CA - 1866 - San Francisco City and County School Bond :
One Thousand Dollar school bond payable in “Gold coin” to “the bearer at a rate of seven per cent interest per annum.” Number 166. Vignette, in center under the City and County of San Francisco, has a woman in mid-1800s dress sitting next to a huge globe. Her right hand is touching the globe, her left is touching an open book on her lap. Next to the globe are a stack of books and a quill pen. Under her feet (her right foot is exposed and shoeless)are flowers. In 1866 exposing a woman's foot might be considered scandalous. In the background to the left is the bay and behind the woman are mountains. Signed by H[enry] P[errin] Coon, mayor from 1863-1867, H[enry] M. Hale, Auditor [1861-1868], and Jos. S. Paxson, Treasurer [1862-1867]. Measures 18.5” x 14.5.” Bleached and the stamps are removed. Coupons begin in 1866 and end in 1881. All coupons are signed by H. M. Hale. All are thirty-five dollar coupons. Redeemed on January 8th, 1866, demand 5011.
