Geenhood and Newbauer Northern Express envelope c1860. The letter was addressed to Fretz & Ralston in San Francisco dated June 28. Fretz & Ralston refers to William Chapman Ralston and R.S. Fretz who were founders of the San Francisco banking firm of Garrison, Morgan, Fretz, and Ralston. Ralston would later go on to found the Bank of California in 1864. The Bank of California went under on August 26, 1875 due to volatile trading of Nevada mining stocks. Greenhood and Newbauer was late 19th century postal company. The founders William Greenhood and L. Goldstein Newbauer were also novice coal mining investors in Contra Costa County, CA in the early 1860’s. The Greenhood and Newbauer frank is in black and gray, there is a red 3¢ postal stamp in the upper right corner. Neither side has been reduced. Very Good condition.
