San Andreas,CA - Calaveras County - c1860 - Metropolitan Hotel Photograph :
The photograph measures 11 x 7" with a white border, mounted on dark gray cardstock measuring 13 3/4 x 9 3/4". The contrast is high and the focus is sharp. The sign for the hotel is visible on the right side of the image. Several areas of foxing and discoloration are noted, particularly on the right side of the image. A significant bend line is noted at the upper right corner while smaller bend lines are noted on the upper left and lower right corners. No photographer identified. "Metropolitan Hotel, San Andreas, Cal., 5286" is printed on the bottom right corner of the image. No information could be found on the hotel itself. The town of San Andreas, however, was settled by Mexican miners in early 1848. Following a major discovery in 1853, the camp began to resemble a town, with a post office established in 1854. Like many mining camps, much had to be rebuilt after devastating fires in 1854, '56, and again in '58. San Andreas has also been the county seat of Calaveras County since the mid 1850's.
