Samuel Whiting Banjo Clock.
Circa 1825. This fine clock was made by Samuel Whiting, one of approximately 12 well-known apprentices of the great Simon Willard, inventor of the Willard's Patent Banjo Clock. Around 1820, several of Willard's apprentices were so taken by the growing popularity of their teacher's invention that they pursued their own riches by copying his patented design in their own shops. One such maker was Samuel Whiting from Concord, Mass. Whiting was active between 1815-1835. The clock features original chestnut case with the classic 5-piece back, original movement, pendulum, dial and hands. The bottom and neck reverse paintings were re-produced on the clock's original glass by the nation's leading reverse painter, Tom Moberg. The original neck and bottom frames were professionally re-gilded with burnished corners by Bo Smith from Rockport, Maine. This fine and important piece of Americana is in excellent running order and is ready to hang.
