Army surgeon and Union general (1829–1892) who was on duty during the Confederate attack on Fort Sumter to start the Civil War and later led troops in support of Col. Strong Vincent at Little Round Top. Original carte-de-visite portrait with a stunningly crisp image, 2.5 x 4, by Leon Van Loo, signed at the bottom in purple ink, “S. W. Crawford, Bv. Maj. Genl.” Mild toning and soiling, otherwise fine condition.
