<B>Samuel Smith Autograph Letter Signed</B></I> "<I>S. Smith</B></I>". One page, 7.75" x 10", np, October 11, 1831, to an R. Gilmor(?) regarding his autograph collection. Smith was a Revolutionary War hero, wounded seriously while defending Fort Mifflin (for which he was voted a sword by congress), suffering the hardships at Valley Forge, and participating in several other battles. In the War of 1812, Smith was a major general, commanding the defenses of Baltimore and Fort McHenry. Later he served his country in several other ways: U.S. Congressman, U.S. Senator, President <I>pro tempore</B></I> of the U.S. Senate, and Baltimore mayor. Very Good condition; folds weak- starting at one, a couple of very tiny pieces torn, mounting traces on verso, contemporary notes at top and bottom in an unknown hand.
