English-American industrialist (1768-1835) called the 'Father of the American Industrial Revolution,' known for importing British textile technology to the United States. ALS signed “S. Slater,” two pages on two adjoining sheets, 8 x 10, January 6, 1815. Handwritten letter to his brother, John Slater, who oversaw the Slatersville Mill in Rhode Island. In part: "I do not expect to go out much tomor'w…Cousin May is very sick & confined to her bed under the Doctor's hands, last night her pulse was 120, this morning she was more comfortable, but not so well tonight…I will assist in measuring the work as soon as I can possibly make it convenient—& in the interim, you had better just run over the work so as to ascertain something near what the upper part, from that already measured, will amount to." He adds a postscript signed with his initials, "S. S.," in full: "No news of importance, saving, all the Banks in Portland & Eastward of them having stop'd paying out specie." In very good condition, with blocks of toning to first page, edge splits to folds, and seal-related loss to second page.
