British civil servant (1633–1703) who was promoted to Secretary to the Admiralty in 1673. Pepys is best remembered as the author of a nine-year, multi-volume diary, one of the essential documents of 17th century British history and literature. LS signed “S. Pepys,” one page, 7.5 x 11, January 16, 1674. Letter written to “My Lord & Gentle’n.” In full, with original spelling and usage: “His Ma’tie having late last night resolved upon having the Const’t Warwick accompany Cap’tn Rook & his Fleete to the Streights, in case shee can bee provided tyme enough for ye voyage; it is his Ma’ties pleasure, that you doe forthw’th give order for her being supplyd from Dover w’th as much provisions as are necessary for ye compleating what shee has to three months. Which pray bee pleased to doe soe as that it may goes away this night at furthest, in case time may not bee saved in sending Orders away by expresse. I remaine My Lord & Gentle’n, Your most humber serv’t.” In very good condition, with intersecting folds (a horizontal fold passes through upper portion of signature), scattered toning and soiling (some lightly affecting signature), and paper loss to left edge and bottom edge.
The “Warwick” to whom Pepys refers was Sir Philip Warwick, a member of Parliament who was passively loyal to King Charles II during the English Commonwealth period. At this time, Pepys was carving his name into the history books as the man who would effectively establish the Admiralty as an efficient department of state—and as a man determined to do his best for the service without using his position for wider political gains. For the almost thirty years following the Restoration of King Charles II in 1660, Pepys dominated naval administration and brought it to its peak of professionalism, rooting out corruption and improving discipline, training, and conditions in the Royal navy. Just one day after writing this letter, Pepys took his seat as a member of Parliament. A rich piece of British history.
