ALS signed “Clemens” on the reverse of a 4.75 x 3 government postcard, no date but postmarked September 26, 1873 in London. Clemens writes to Henry Lee. In full: “No—don’t write Paris till we see you again. We’ll be down by the 11.10 Victoria Sunday. You must dine with us that evening here.” For emphasis, the author has boldly underlined the words, “till we see you again.” Scattered soiling, slight smudging from an erasure, a collector’s filing notation beneath the signature, and show-through from a postal cancellation on the front side, otherwise fine condition. The author had traveled to London in 1873 for a series of profitable lectures—a typical practice whenever Clemens felt he was in need of extra money—and here all but demands that Mr. Lee not proceed with some type of plan already in motion “till we see you again.” In October, Clemens presented six such lectures in London and another in Liverpool. His London appearances were especially successful, where the somewhat reserved and skeptical British audience—unaccustomed to American entertainment—eventually came out in droves with many disappointed people turned away from the overcrowded theater.
