Fantastic vintage platinum or matte-finish 5 x 7 photo of Clemens in his trademark white suit smoking a cigar, signed and inscribed in fountain pen to novelist Gilbert Parker, “To Sir Gilbert Parker, with the love of Mark Twain, April/09.” Photo appears to be affixed to a slightly larger mount, and is triple matted and framed to an overall size of 14 x 15.5. In fine condition.
This image is pure Samuel Clemens (and Mark Twain) as the cigar-chomping author sends greetings to a fellow writer. Attired in his flamboyant suit—one he once described as being ‘just stunning’—Clemens was so fond of the pose that he chose to bestow it on Parker, who had hosted the author at his residence in 1893. This was the catalogue cover lot for the Karanovich Mark Twain collection which sold at Sotheby's on June 19, 2003. An iconic image from of America’s greatest writers, one of the best we’ve ever seen.
