AQS, signed “Mark Twain,” on an off-white 4.75 x 7.5 album page. Clemens pens a quote from Pudd’nhead Wilson: “It could probably be shown by facts and statistics that there is no distinctly native American criminal class except Congress. [Puddinhead Wilson]. Mark Twain, Aug 9/94.” A light block of toning to left side over a portions of quote and signature, and light toning along other edges, otherwise fine condition.

Written by Clemens in 1894, Pudd'nhead Wilson features elements of the author’s characteristic humor, suspense, and irony. The book criticizes society for allowing the existence of such things as racial prejudice and slavery. The famed author’s biting commentary—in both his work and the quotation written here—are both constant reminders that existing problems with the federal government is certainly nothing new!
