Bank check, 7.75 x 2.75, filled out and signed by Clemens, payable to Clinton Rice for $12.00, March 1, 1875. Encapsulated in a plastic PSA/DNA authentication holder grading the “auto grade only” an “NM-MT 8.” Two lightly trimmed edges, scattered show-through from bank stamps on reverse lightly affecting Clemens’ signature, and scattered light soiling, otherwise fine condition.

According to a letter sent by Rice to Clemens (now in the Mark Twain Collection at the University of California—Berkeley) the author and his brother had secured the services of Rice, an attorney, to find a buyer for a parcel of land in Tennessee in 1870. Orion Clemens eventually found a purchaser on his own—and failed to repay the $11.70 Rice felt he was owed for work he had done. A second letter, also in the university’s collection, shows that Clemens sent this check to his brother with the hope ‘that the Tennessee Land is now in hell,’ asking that the bill be paid, and explaining that he has included an additional 30 cents ‘to pay for the Washington bank for collecting it.’ Fantastic document with an equally exciting tale behind it!
