American clergyman (1721–1803) who founded the doctrine of Hopkinsianism or New Divinity, a form of Calvinism that espoused free will and the denial of original sin. Hopkins was also an early and prominent abolitionist who published his views in the pamphlet “A Dialogue Concerning the Slavery of Africans.” Scarce handwritten manuscript, evidently an extract from a journal or diary, signed at the top of the first page “Hopkins” and at the conclusion, “Samuel Hopkins, D.D.,” eight pages on four sheets stitched into booklet form, 3 x 4.75, the first page dated February 2, 1750. A lengthy collection of scriptural passages with commentary by Hopkins. A few excerpts: “M[alach]i 4:2. ‘But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of Righteousness arise with Healing in his Wings; and ye shall go forth and grow up as calves in the stall.’ This Prophecie of Malachi complects[?]…the Law & the Prophets…. The Bigger part of the Nations of the world have not yet received any Healing from the Sun…. How is Christ to be prized? He is the source of all spiritual light & life….” In fine overall condition, with pencil notations to back of last page, and a bit of mild toning.
