Samuel Hodgdon, Washington's Superintendent of Samuel Hodgdon, Washington's Superintendent of Milita
Samuel Hodgdon, Washington's Superintendent of Military Stores, Details the Operation of His Department. Letter Signed, as Superintendent of Military Stores, 3 pages, recto and verso, 8" by 9.25", Philadelphia, October 6, 1796. Some wear and age-toning, with a couple folds showing some separation, but boldly signed: good, overall. This rare and interesting report, mostly likely to the Board of War, specifically concerns the personnel, functions, and salaries of the new Department. Hodgdon had a long career, in the Revolution and during the earliest days of the new nation, as a Quartermaster of the Army. He enjoyed the confidence of Washington and served at his request, as Quartermaster General and later, Superintendent of Military Stores. He retired, finally, in 1800, and went on to a successful business career, which culminated in his selection to the presidency of a trust and insurance firm, the Pennsylvania Company, in 1813. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.
