Boston-born Baptist minister and academic (1808–1895) best known as the lyricist of ‘America’ (‘My Country, ’Tis of Thee’), written while he was a student at Andover Theological Seminary. Crisp AQS on an off-white 3.5 x 2.5 card. Smith pens the second stanza from ‘America.’ In full: “My native country, thee, / Land of the noble free, / Thy name I love; / I love thy rocks and rills, / Thy woods and templed hills; / My heart with rapture thrills / Like that above.” Signed at the conclusion, “S. F. Smith, Written in 1832, Nov. 10, 1892.” In fine to very fine condition. Accompanied by an envelope notated by the original collector.
