Boston-born Baptist minister and academic (1808-1895) best known as the lyricist of 'America' ('My Country, 'Tis of Thee'), written while he was a student at Andover Theological Seminary. Uncommonly early broadside of Samuel Francis Smith’s 1831 patriotic song ‘America’ ('My Country, 'Tis of Thee'), 4.25 x 7.25, signed below in fountain pen, “S. F. Smith, 1832.” The song, in part: “My country! 'tis of thee, / Sweet land of liberty, / Of thee I sing; / Land where my fathers died! / Land of the Pilgrims' pride! / From every mountain side / Let freedom ring!" Handsomely matted and framed to an overall size of 11.5 x 14. In fine condition.
