Union naval officer (1803–1865) who made significant contributions to the modernization of the US Navy, despite being blamed for the Union’s failure at Charleston. War-dated ALS signed “S. F. DuPont,” one page, 4.5 x 7.5, February 27, 1862. Letter to an unidentified general. In full: “I have been much tried by the weather—the delay however brought my ammunition, but it was under Hay & Oats and in spite of all I could do I have to have my gunboats to receive it, who will follow, but I miss the tide.” DuPont’s postscript states he will be leaving with the coming tide. Letter is inlaid to a 5.5 x 9 off-white sheet. In fine condition.
