American artist and inventor (1791–1872) whose development of the telegraph revolutionized communication—and indeed, society as a whole—and represented a crucial step toward such later innovations as the telephone. ALS signed “Saml. F. B. Morse,” one page, 4.75 x 7.5, August 30, 1851. Letter to Charles E. Willis. In full: “In complying with your request for my autograph, I cannot give it without saying how much gratified Mrs. Morse and myself have been with your visit, and Ms. Willis’ to us, and sincerely hope we may often be favored with your most agreeable company.” In fine condition, with a uniform shade of mild toning, and a few light wrinkles. Accompanied by the original transmittal envelope, addressed in another hand, and marked “Valuable.”
