Morse’s personal copy of a pamphlet entitled Slavery Sanctioned by the Bible: A Tract for Northern Christians, published by J. B. Lippincott & Co. of Philadelphia in 1861, 34 pages, 9 x 6, signed at the top of the front cover in pencil by Morse, “With some slight exceptions, an excellent essay. S. F. B. M.” A few notes are penciled inside in the margins by Morse, with comments such as “Objectionable” and “Not argument but excuse.” In very good to fine condition, with a central vertical crease to pamphlet, and soiling and small areas of paper loss to the covers. Morse advocated for slavery on religious grounds, believing it to be sanctioned by the Bible. This pamphlet, an unusual Northern pro-slavery publication, holds the same view; the author, John Richter Jones, was a loyal Union soldier despite his stance on slavery, and he would be killed in action during the Civil War. A highly unusual and interesting piece.
