American artist and inventor (1791–1872) whose development of the telegraph revolutionized communication—and indeed, society as a whole—and represented a crucial step toward such later innovations as the telephone. Ink signature, “The autograph of Silvio Pellico, given me by his friend Piero Maroncelli, Sam. F. B. Morse,” on an off-white 6.5 x 3.75 slip, affixed to a same-size cardstock sheet. Intersecting folds and a toned piece of tape affixed to the lower border, otherwise fine condition. Accompanied by an unsigned carte-de-visite portrait of Morse.
