Samuel F.B. Morse Autograph Signed Poem, "The Sundial", one page, 8" x 10", May 13, 1845. Best known, of course, for inventing the Morse Code, Samuel F.B. Morse indulged an visual artistic bent on canvas and, as this item demonstrates, composed verse as well. Following a brief Latin introduction, the first stanza of the poem reads, "The sun when it shines is a clear cloudless sky/ Marks the time on my disk in figures of light/ But if clouds intervene I pass them all by/ I note not the hour except they be bright...". Two vertical folds and one horizontal fold, light stains. Dated nearly a year after Morse's famous Washington-to-Baltimore telegraph, this manuscript carries a large, bold signature. Very good condition.
