Samuel F.B. Morse Autograph Letter Signed "Saml. F.B. Morse." Four pages, 5.25" x 8.2", New York, March 11, 1862. This letter is written to Samuel's sister Cornelia, it is a lengthy letter with many subjects, including war, family, and school. This letter is full of interesting sections, for example, "…in that while so many in our beloved North & South are in deepest sorrow, our loved family circle are So exempt from trouble except in the profound Sympathy which every American heart must entertain, not entirely callous to all feelings of humanity…" This is just one of the sections where Morse discusses the war and his feelings on the Union divided. Morse was a well-known defender of the institution of slavery, believing it to be divinely sanctioned. The letter is in very fine condition; usual folds are present; corners are slightly torn and wrinkled. Included with this letter is a handsome engraving of Morse, perfect for display. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection.
