<B>Samuel Dexter Autograph Document Signed</B></I> “<I>Saml. Dexter</B></I>”. One page (with endorsements on verso), 8” x 9.75”, Boston, December 21, 1803, in ink. Samuel Dexter (1761-1816) was an American statesman who served in Congress and several cabinet positions. Dexter served briefly as Secretary of War under President John Adams and served an even briefer time as Secretary of the Treasury under Thomas Jefferson. After retiring from public service Dexter resumed his law practice in Boston. It was in his capacity as lawyer that he prepared this legal document which acknowledges receipt of payment of $400.00 “<I>being in full of that part of charges & costs in the controversy between the Plymouth Company & the Claimants…</B></I>”.
