Inventor of the Colt revolver and founder of the Colt Firearms Company (1814–1862). ALS signed “Saml. Colt,” one page, lightly-lined, 7.75 x 6.5, February 23, 1852. Letter to J. H. Bailey in New York. In full: “The object for which I want a draftsman would not warrant my paying the price you ask. Should I hereafter require your services I will wright [sic] to you or Mr. Brown.” In fine condition, with a central horizontal fold and a couple small spots of ink erosion to a heavy stroke of text.

Although Colt’s need to hire an individual to create a sketch is not revealed here, the firearms maker was developing a rotating chambered-breeched firearm during this same period, and is also known to have been working on an experimental belt pistol—either of which may have warranted the aforementioned services of a draftsman. Throughout the 1850s, Colt improved upon the design of his now-famous revolvers, with his operation evolving into a model of precision manufacturing, automation, and process integration. Handwritten correspondence from Colt is extremely rare.
