Samuel Chase (1743-1811) Signed Document Samuel Chase (1743-1811) Signer of the Declaration of Indep
Samuel Chase (1743-1811) Signer of the Declaration of Independence, scarce manuscript Document Signed, "Samuel Chase", three pages, 9" x 14", Baltimore, June 2, 1787, a lengthy document discussing a complex estate in which several of the heirs are disputing the interpretation of the will due to unclear language. The document reads in very small part: "The World Legacy has been held to extend to a devise of Land, but such construction was given to comply with the Intention of the Testator; and because if the World Legacy was confined to pecuniary Legacies, the Divise [sic] over Could not take Effect, being after a dying without issue; and the law will not allow a pecuniary legacy to be limited after a dying without issue generally..." Chase had a varied and eventful career. During his tenure with the Continental Congress he was sent with Benjamin Franklin and others in a delegation to Canada in an unsuccessful attempt to convince Quebec to join the American Revolution. After the war, he served as a judge in Maryland and was appointed to the Supreme Court in 1796 where he gained the dubious distinction of being the first and only Supreme Court justice to be impeached (though he was acquitted by the Senate). Moderate scattered foxing and toning, partial separation at folds, otherwise very good. A worthy example with interesting content. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.
