American statesman (1722–1803) and signer of the Declaration of Independence from Massachusetts who was an organizer of the Boston Tea Party and one of his state’s most ardent supporters of the patriotic cause. Partly-printed DS, one page, 15.75 x 12.5, August 19, 1794. Governor Adams appoints James Warner “Captain of a Company in the first Regiment of the first Brigade Fourth Division of the Militia of this Commonwealth, comprehending the County of Hampshire.” Signed beneath the paper seal “Samuel Adams.” In fine condition, with intersecting folds, with a couple of small separations at intersections, light mirroring of text from folding, and some mild toning. The white paper seal is crisp and intact.
This military appointment dates from a climactic period of the Whiskey Rebellion, the resistance movement in what was then the western part of the United States. Derived from a 1791 excise tax on the namesake beverage, the Whiskey Rebellion was rooted in the westerners dissatisfaction with various policies of the eastern-based national government. Though it had started in 1791, George Washington’s patience had run its course by 1794 with the president issuing a proclamation on August 7, 1794, calling out the militia and ordering the disaffected westerners to return to their homes. Washington's order mobilized an army of approximately 13,000 troops, with the president himself leading the troops to suppress the uprising. Among those men was Captain Warner, following the orders laid out here by Adams.
