Screen-used plaster statue of the Philistine god Dagon from DeMille's classic 1949 film Samson and Delilah. Black-and-gold figure measures approximately 15? tall, with a base measuring 8 x 5.75. The pagan deity can be seen in Delilah's quarters and later, at the temple, being sold out of a cart as the people enter. In fine condition, with a few slight chips and dings.

In making the film, DeMille spared no expense in creating props, hiring extras for large scenes, and designing sets—at the time it was made, Samson and Delilah was the most expensive film ever made. This Dagon figure exemplifies the sense of craftsmanship and attention to detail that characterizes the production. A nine foot version was also made, which Samson displaces to topple the temple in the finale. Interestingly, a Dagon also appears in the film Sunset Blvd. as an inside joke. The films were being shot at the same time at Paramount, and DeMille played a prominent role as himself in Sunset Blvd. They also utilized the same set designer, Hans Dreier, who went on to win Academy Awards for Set Decoration for both films. A magnificent item from one of the most successful films ever made.
